What Does "Discovering" Mean to Me?

What Does ‘Discovery’ Mean?
Discovery basically means you have found or learned something AMAZING! For example, if you found something, that means you have discovered. You can discover a cave, a mummy in a pyramid, or even an emerald underground! My picture is about climbing to the tallest mountain and discovering a dream stone in a cave. When you learn about discovering, it is the best!

What Makes an Effective Professional Arcade Game?

I researched a game called Sphere Runner to find out what an effective professional arcade game does. The creator of the game is David Carachelo. How you play the game is you have a little orange spaceship that you try to get over spheres on the grid. So when you get all of the dark blue spheres filled in, you move on to the next level. There can be different designs that the little spheres form. Also, it gets harder and harder as you get farther in the game. If you want to find the rules of the game, the rules are placed under the game board. For the difficulty of the game 1-4 rating, I would choose 4 because it seems really easy, but it is not. The way you win the game is to collect all of the spheres and complete all the levels. When you win the game you can put your name in the high score thing and play again to improve.
The materials you will probably need to build this game are a lot of cardboard, tape, glue, a couple of grid papers, scissors, a little orange spaceship, spheres, rules, lighters, four shooters. To build the game, you will need time but also you need about $50.00. To buy the game it would be about $35.00.

The title of the game is Sphere Runner. The URL address is

Design Brief

What is the Concept Design of My Crusie Arcade Game?
The name of our Crusie Arcade game that we created is called The School Box. You play the game by getting the ball through the tunnels in the “School Box” and getting the ball out by taking the right path. The rules of the game are displayed above the back of the “School Box”. We would say that the level of difficulty out of 1-4 rating system is a 4. To win you have to get the ball out safely and without it falling. If you win you get a prize.

In our blueprint we drew our game in orthographic design. An orthographic design is a drawing that shows front, side, and top. Our design in the drawing shows a giant pull out drawer from a desk. Our giant pull out drawer is like a maze inside a box.

The materials we need to build the game are a big cardboard box, duct tape, old toys, cups, and school supplies. We think it would take around 5 weeks to finish the game. The problems that we foresee are: what if the ball stops while somebody is playing, what if people steal the prizes when we are not there, and what if people disrespect our game?

What were the Results of Testing Our Game?
Examiner: Mrs. Horst

Date: 1/15/13

Praise: I like how you were flexible with your plans and had to revamp your design and alter your blueprints. Very creative game! I love how you have clearly marked the directions and rules.

Question: Do the players get to choose their prize?

Polish: Work on your ramp to make sure it is not tilted toward win. You may want to add a label to the win side.

Student Comment: Anna and I ran out of time to make The School Box game, so we wanted to make it flexible with our plans. We tried to make The School Box a little easier than having a really hard game. We both liked duct tape so we added duct tape to make it very creative. We tried to make the directions clearer for the kindergarteners. The players do get to pick their prize. The ramp is now tilted to go to fail and win, so it is even. We also added a label to the win side.

Examiner: Mrs. Koska

Date: 2/11/13

Praise: I like the idea of the drawer. Love the ball. It was very creative.

Question: How did you get the idea?

Polish: Make some kind of obstacles for the ball has to go through.

Student Comment: We thought the ball would stand out in our game, The School Box, instead of a little marble. Anna just came to me and had the idea of a pull out drawer. We got the idea from a mechanical pencil with no lead in it. We tried to make the obstacles to make it harder but we ran out of time.

Examiner: Mrs. Ferrens & Mrs. Bair

Date: 2/7/13

Praise: Attractive design; well thought out concept

Question: How did the design of the ball impact the outcome each time? What if you used closed tubes – instead of an open concept for the path.

Polish: Could make the path longer using multiple boxes.

Student Comment: We really worked hard on The School Box project. We used a lot of duct tape to make it attractive. The concept of the game was to make a drawer. The drawer kept the ball in so it would not fall out if somebody threw the ball too hard. We wanted the ball to be bumpy so it had a chance for fail or win. The tubes would have obstacles in them so that could work if they were big enough. That would be awesome to have a big box for the School Box game but the duct tape would run out quickly so we would have had to get multiple rolls.

Make It Better
How Can We Make the Crusie Arcade Game Better?
What can we do to improve our Arcade Creation?

I could improve by fixing the rules.

Specifically, how would we do this?

We can do this by fixing the rules to make them go with the game.

Reflection on Process

What did you learn to do with the Crusie Arcade Project?

I learned to make pathways from above the ground.

What do you know now that you didn’t know before doing the Project?

I now know to be very creative with what I do. Now I can show how creative I am.

What can you do now that you couldn’t before doing this project?

I can now be open with all my ideas that come to mind.

What did you like about the project that helped your learning?

I liked all the colors that we used and how they contrasted with each other. Anna and I bonded with each other and we became better friends.

What could have been done differently to help your learning?

We could have done a lot different by making the box bigger so we can have more space.

A Final Reflection:

Anna and I made the game, The School Box, and we wanted it to be a little hard. The design for the obstacles was hard to make but we still got through. What Anna and I could have done to improve our game was to have the rules make sense, because we changed the plans. From the game making I learned how to create pathways above the ground. I now know to be very creative with what I do. And I can show how creative I can get. Before the project nothing came to mind for ideas, but now I have many ideas that do come to mind. What I liked about this project were the colors and how they contrasted with each other. What helped me work on the project more was how Anna and I bonded with each other and we became better friends. The game was built with a lot of duct tape to make it colorful and to help it stay together. We had many problems like the cardboard for the path breaking, duct tape coming off, and the ball rolling off the path. Anna and I felt really proud about the final result. We could have done a lot more, like making the box bigger. Anna and I had a lot of fun discovering how to make a game creative, easy, and fun.
